Crow continued his speech, “How would coyotes eat?… or owls?   … or bobcats?  Half the planet would starve to death!”
Worm hung his head and his glow began to fade slightly.  There was a hesitation in his voice, “I don’t know all those details.  All I know is what I saw down in that tunnel and what it did to me.   You all know that I did not have to return to the surface, but what I know is that I did have to return … to share what I saw!”
“Well, it sure would be great not to have to listen for snakes all the time,” Vole was suddenly energized.  I lost two cousins to a copperhead.”
Robin appeared to be lost in some deep contemplation.  When she finally joined the conversation, she asked, “How is this all supposed to happen, Worm?  Starting tomorrow, are all robins going to just give up eating worms?  Will my cousin, Woodpecker, start eating seeds instead of insects?”
“Stop asking me all these questions!  I am just the messenger.  I have no idea how this is going to happen … or when  … or even why, for that matter.”
“We need to find someone who does know!!”  It was Crow again; trying to sound authoritative.
