Robin, Worm, Crow, and Vole Con’t. (Worm’s confession)

Worm, already feeling akward and self conscious, was now just noticing his own glow.  Everyone was staring at him.  From the inside, the glow did not feel especially intense.  There was no hot flash or warmth of any kind.  Worm did notice a subtle shift in his internal energy.  It felt like an inner tourch, a beacon of light had been lit from the inside.  It gave him the confidence to speak.
“All my life, I have been warned about the dangers of traveling too close to the surface.  I have lost friends and relatives to the menace from above -here one day … gone the next.”  I have seen many dangers… I have toiled long, and I have been caught in life’s snares on more than one occasion.  But, today was the first time I faced death head to head.”
The others were silent – he had their rapt attention.  Worm finished his little speech.  Silence followed.  Finally, as was his habit, Crow spoke again.  “Wow, I never thought about what I would do if death was staring me in the face.  We crows are smarter than to get ourselves into a compromising position.”
Worm was not finished.  He cleared his (very long) throat and spoke again.
(to be continued)
