Robin, Worm, Crow, and Vole - now featuring: Raccoon

"He spoke for an hour, but he listened too.  He really understood me like no other Hu-man in my past."  Raccoon's eyes began to fill with warm, emotional tears, re-living those moments with the Hu-man.

He said he had a message from 'The One', 'The Mystery, none greater'.  He said the the day was coming and Now Is when a lion would lie down with a lamb.  He claimed to be a 'voice, crying in the wilderness', "  Only he said, "Crying for the Wilderness.. He remembered the lightness of his Being when the Hu-man was present.

Taking in a deep breath, Racoon, held it, and then, let it out with a relaxed, gentle sigh.

The silence was broken by (who else) Crow.  "Did you think to ask the Hu-man how we were all going to eat?"

"No ..... it just did not seem important at the time."  Raccoon did not appreciate the interruption.

"Well, I for one, sure would like to meet this Hu-man," said Vole wistfully.

"I meet him every day," Raccoon was proud to say it.

Robin, Worm, Crow, and Vole Con't. - Raccoon weaves his story

Raccoon continued searching for just the right words.  "I still had my eyes closed, expecting pain and death.  The next thing I knew, I was being petted gently on the top of my head!  The a soft voice spoke to me saying coforting words like 'be calm... I'm not going to hurt you...'  ."

Crow, who just always seemed to have something to say, spoke up.  "Was it a hu-man?"

"Yes, but unlike any I had ever heard about or observed from a distance."

Worm was excited.  "You see!  ... it is all part of my vision.  Hu-mans being nice to us.  Who would have thought?"

Robin responded, "Well, I still think you cannot trust Hu-mans!"

Not to be outdone, Vole added her two cents worth.  "I agree Hu-mans are evil!"

Raccoon continued, "I don't know about any of that.  I just know that for the next hour this Hu-man was abloe to communicate with me in my own thought forms.  This is what I learned."

Robin, Worm, Crow, and Vole Con't (Raccoon's Speech)

Raccoon had a hundred percent of all of their attention.  "I used to hunt fish, rodents and other small animals.  I especially liked the taste of a fresh chicken.  One day when I was hot on the trail of a guinea, I encountered a Being who changed my life."

Crow interrupted, "It's a good thing you don't like crows!  We would tear your eyes out!"

Raccoon ingnored Crow's bravado.  "This Being was like no other critter I have ever encountered.  I had been taught from birth, that this species was the most dangerous and treacherous on the earth.  You can imagine my terror when there it was blocking my path.  I was, literally, inches away from it!"

"What did you do?" Vole could not contain herself.

"I did what anyone of you would have done.  I froze, unable to move for fear."

"What happened next?" Robin leaned closer to hear better.

"Well," said Raccoon, "I had closed my eyes preparing to meet Creator when something totally unexpected happened."

Robin, Worm, Crow, and Vole Continued - They Explore Worm's Sighting

Crow banked to his left with Robin closed behind.  Vole was huffing as he tried to catch up.  As they got closer to worm's discovery, Crow could see what looked like a large hollow in an even larger oak.  The birds and Worm landed in the grass near the tree.  A short time later, Vole caught up bearly able to speak for his shortness of breath.  "What did you see?"

"Just this nest," replied Crow with obious disapointment in his voice.  "We're trusting Worm on this one."

Worm poked his head from Crow's beak.  "I think you could use some fresh mint in your diet, Crow."

Crow laughed ... but not too hard.

It was quickly decided that Vole would be the best candidate to approach the gaping hole in the tree.  He began to move cautiously toward the opening.  Vole disappeared in the bottom of the opening, while the others waited some distance back.

It was a long time before Vole poked his head back out of the Oak.  He was muttering something that the others could not quite make out.  As he approached they could make out the muttering, "Very interesting, very interesting ...."

Robin, Worm, Crow, And Vole continued (Worm spots something)

It was an unlikely coterie that began their journey together that day.  To a casual observer, the scene was comical, with the birds and worm flitting from tree to tree and Vole scurrying right behind on the ground.  Crow was in the lead, but he knew as little of where he was going as did each.
Worm was perched in Crow’s open beak in awe.  He had never seen the world from higher than an old log he once climbed.  The expansiveness of this new world left him speechless in wonder.  By now his body had returned to normal; the glow was gone.  As Crow headed for the next tree, Worm spotted something in the distance which totally grabbed his attention.
“What’s that?!”
“What’s what?”, Crow was irritated by the vagueness of the reference.
“Look over your left wing tip.” Worm was straining to get a better look.
Crow twisted his head and looked out to the left.  At first he could not make out what it was even though his vision was very much better than Worm’s.

Robin, Worm, Crow, and Vole Con’t. (A Journey Begins)

The discussion continued for quite some time.  Robin, Worm, and Vole all expressed their opinions.  The one thing all agreed on was that they needed to find someone ‘who does know’ (to quote Crow).
One thing led to the next and soon they found themselves, ‘the 4 musketeers on a mission’!  Crow led the way (of course) cradling Worm in his Beak.  Vole ran from tree to tree, following the erratic path of Crow and Robin.
They had tried, as a group, to agree upon whom to see.  But is was not happening and finally Crow suggested, “Let’s trust the journey, itself, to lead us to the truth.”
The concept sounded so good that everyone agreed to try it.
Now, here they were on a journey to ‘they didn’t know where’.

Robin, Worm, Crow, and Vole – Crow Is a Skeptic

Crow continued his speech, “How would coyotes eat?… or owls?   … or bobcats?  Half the planet would starve to death!”
Worm hung his head and his glow began to fade slightly.  There was a hesitation in his voice, “I don’t know all those details.  All I know is what I saw down in that tunnel and what it did to me.   You all know that I did not have to return to the surface, but what I know is that I did have to return … to share what I saw!”
“Well, it sure would be great not to have to listen for snakes all the time,” Vole was suddenly energized.  I lost two cousins to a copperhead.”
Robin appeared to be lost in some deep contemplation.  When she finally joined the conversation, she asked, “How is this all supposed to happen, Worm?  Starting tomorrow, are all robins going to just give up eating worms?  Will my cousin, Woodpecker, start eating seeds instead of insects?”
“Stop asking me all these questions!  I am just the messenger.  I have no idea how this is going to happen … or when  … or even why, for that matter.”
“We need to find someone who does know!!”  It was Crow again; trying to sound authoritative.

Robin, Worm, Crow, and Vole Continued (The great debate)

Well, there it was  …out in the open  …. shocking and too incredible to fully grok.  Of course Crow was the first to speak.  “I have seen the seasons come and go many times and I have seen the dangers and the consequences of a lapse in vigilance.”
“I have too, but something has shifted and continues to shift,” Worm said thoughtfully, almost to himself.
Vole, who usually kept her opinions to herself, spoke up and said sarcastically, “I suppose we will see a lion and lamb lying down together.”
Robin laughed nerviously, “Nope, it won’t work.  There would be an explosion of every species and not enough to go around.  There would be starvation all over the earth.”
“I know it all sounds too crazy,” said worm, “but I saw it clear as day down in that dark tunnel.  And how do you explain this energy shift in me that is causing this glow?”
“Well, I just don’t see it!” snapped Crow.  “I, for one, am not going to let my guard down.  Your asking us to believe that there will be no more eating of flesh.  I just don’t buy it!”

Worm Finishes His Speech (Robin, Worm, Crow, and Vole Con't.)

The glow emanating from worm had now intensified to a cherry red.  Even Vole had to shield her eyes.  Crow and Robin had instinctively backed up a few steps from the Vole tunnel's entrance.  Worm was too caught up in his own speech to notice the increasing intensity.

His inner experience was of total inspiration.  The fervor of inspired thoughts matched the intensity of his glow.  "Friends, .... yes, I consider you all my friends; I know from my brief time on this earth that survival of the fittest is the rule.  But, I have seen a new day!"

Crow fidgeted nervously, standing on one foot, then the other.  He stifled an anxious laugh, thinking that Worm had totally lost it.  He would have dismissed Worm as demented, except for the glow; he just could not explain away the glow.

"I have seen a day, and it is coming soon, when all will have enough to eat without violence or hunting or being hunted"

"Now he has lost it!" thought Crow.

Robin and Vole both got swept up in the vision; perhaps it was easier for them as females.

Robin, Worm, Crow, and Vole Con’t. (Worm’s confession)

"I had a lot of time to think down there in the dark," Worm struggled to come up with just the right words.  "I have lived 11 winters, so I have seen a lot of things.  I have seen crows eat my kind when they are hungry enough.  I have even seen voles on the edge of starvation eating cardboard.  I even had my tail chopped off by a shovel once, but I grew another one".

Robin, Vole, and Crow were totally engaged by Worm's little speech.  Serveral times, Crow wanted to interrupt, but he held his beak.  He wanted Worm to get to the point.  Where was this speech leading?  Why did Worm return to the surface, risking his life again?

Crow could have never guessed where this speech was leading.  Of course, this did not slow down Crow's speculations one bit.  Robin, was thinking how wonderful a worm would taste after all those sun seeds.  Vole, a bit hard of hearing as well as somewhat blind, hung on every word Worm spoke.

What worm revealed next, changed four lives, forever!

Robin, Worm, Crow, and Vole Con’t. (Worm’s confession)

Worm, already feeling akward and self conscious, was now just noticing his own glow.  Everyone was staring at him.  From the inside, the glow did not feel especially intense.  There was no hot flash or warmth of any kind.  Worm did notice a subtle shift in his internal energy.  It felt like an inner tourch, a beacon of light had been lit from the inside.  It gave him the confidence to speak.
“All my life, I have been warned about the dangers of traveling too close to the surface.  I have lost friends and relatives to the menace from above -here one day … gone the next.”  I have seen many dangers… I have toiled long, and I have been caught in life’s snares on more than one occasion.  But, today was the first time I faced death head to head.”
The others were silent – he had their rapt attention.  Worm finished his little speech.  Silence followed.  Finally, as was his habit, Crow spoke again.  “Wow, I never thought about what I would do if death was staring me in the face.  We crows are smarter than to get ourselves into a compromising position.”
Worm was not finished.  He cleared his (very long) throat and spoke again.

Robin, Worm, Crow, and Vole (Vole Delivers)

When Vole poked his head out from the tunnel, Robin and Crow were deep into an intense conversation about integrety.  ”I know he will return because he promised he would.” Robin said with conviction.

“You are a fool, Robin!  No worm is going to return to certain death just because he promised.” Crow chuckled.  ”Life and living to see another day have their own morals.”
“Worm may plead for his life, but I am sure he will return.”
“Ahem!” …. Vole managed to speak through a mouth full of seeds, although several when spewing out as she spoke.  Vole spit out the rest of the seeds, “Worm sent these with my blessing.  He regrets to inform you that he had another engagement.”
Crow began to laugh, “There are your morals, friend!”
Robin could not help a bit of a laugh, herself.  ”That is enough seeds to fill me up,” she said through here chuckles.
But, all laughter stopped when worm poked his head out of the tunnel entrance.

Robin, Worm, and Crow Con’t. (Worm overcomes his moral dilemma)

Posted on  by shamsuddin001

Worm was still brooding over what to do, when suddenly Vole appeared from the tunnel behind him.
“What’s up worm?” greeted Vole in a jovial manner.  ”You haven’t taken to eating seeds, now?”
Worm explained his situation to Vole and to his amazement, Vole volunteered not only share some of her sunflower seeds with Robin, but to deliver them on behalf of worm.  (Not many people know that voles tend toward generosity and helpfulness.  Some speculate it is because of all the alone time in their underground havens that voles are that way.)
So Vole gathered as many seeds as she could fit in her mouth and headed up the passageway.

Robin and Crow share their Hell Generation Stories (Robin, Worm, and Crow Con’t)

Back on the surface, Robin and Crow were deep in a conversation about the vagaries of raising a new generation every year.  (Just imagine if our children grew up in a single year and then we started over the next year).

“I remember three seasons back hatching a brood of chicks that I call ‘the generation from hell’,” Robin said with a shudder
.
“Our ‘hell generation’ was just last year,” Crow responded.  “I will never forget when the three of them attacked a pack of coyotes.  They said afterward that the coyotes started it.  All I know is that one coyote left missing an eye!”

“Oh my God, that’s awful!”  Robin could think of nothing better to say.  And so the discussion died a natural death.

*******

Underneath them, Worm had resolved his moral dilemma and knew just what to do.

Worm Has a Moral Dilema (Robin, Worm, and Crow Con’t)

Worm had a major dilemma to work through. He felt that his integrity was at stake. How many seeds should he deliver before his escape? Many would not give his ‘predicament’ a second thought. If he were to talk to crow, for example, crow would say, ” So what’s the problem? Escape at any time you feel like it! Survival has no morals.”
But worm was not like crow at all. He had promised robin to bring seeds if she released him, and he was determined to deliver on his promise. On the other hand, worm had no intention of becoming bird food.
Worm had already determined that he would deliver at least one more sunflower seed. Three seemed like a sacred number and perhaps a good omen to quit deliveries and make his escape. Somehow worm was not satisfied. He needed a better story for his conscience to let him off the hook.

Robin and Worm (with Crow [Con't])

Robin and Worm (with Crow [Con't])
Worm had disappeared down the vole hole sometime during the laugh fest.  Robin and crow were still laughing hard when crow noticed that worm was gone.  "Hey robin, look!  You have lost worm for sure now."

Robin's laughter stopped like a train when someone pulls the emergency cord.  "He'll be back with another seed.  We had a deal."

"Wake up and smell the roses, red-breast; there's no way that worm will be back to the surface anytime soon!"

"Crow, you are such a cynic.  Worm and I have a," she hesitated trying to find just the right word, "... relationship.  I trust that worm!"

Crow chuckled, "suit yourself, but I wouldn't be waiting too long.  It's already late in the day and the sun will be setting soon.  I finished my rounds, so I can keep you company for a little while."   Robin and crow stood in silence until crow asked, "So where is your better half?"
"He is working on our nest.  We're expecting, you know."

"Wow, congratulations!"  Crow was totally sincere.  He and his partner had been trying for the past six months with no results."

Robin, Worm, and Crow (Con't)

Robin and Worm (Con't)
Just then a sunflower seed appeared rising out of the vole hole. It was followed by a young handsome worm.  Crow about fell over again, but not from laughing.  His beak dropped wide open.  In that brief moment a new respect for robin was born.
Crow was the first to speak.  "Well, I'll be a scarecrows uncle!  Robin, I dunno how you pulled this one off and I don't thinks I wants to!"
Robin was the one laughing now, and she could not stop.  The scene was just too funny.  She fell on her side, howling with the sublime incredulity of the unfolding scene.  She finally regained her composer.  "Crow .... Worm;  Worm .... Crow"
Suddenly, all three were caught up in a vision of just how ridiculous was this entire scene.  The laughter began with chuckles and ended with all three sharing a gut-splitting laugh.

Robin and Worm (Con't)

Robin and Worm (Con't)
Robin waited a long time.  Still no worm.  She wondered whether voles eat worms.  She wondered whether she had been had.  Her speculations were brought to a screeching halt by a thick, raspy voice from behind.
"Whatcha waitin for?"  It was crow and there was a note of sarcasm in his voice.  "Worms don't just crawl out of the ground, ya know  .... unless it's rainin."

"Well, as a matter of fact, Mr. Know-it-all, I expect a worm to crawl out of that hole any minute!   And.... I expect he'll be pushing a sun seed for me."

Crow laughed so hard, he fell on his side.  The picture of a worm pushing a sunflower seed was just too much. Finally, crow got hold of himself and stood up.  "You won't mind if I wait with ya for this little miracle, then, would ya?"

Robbin was totally embarrassed .... and a bit pissed off at crow, but she managed to keep her composer.  "It's true!"  There was a long pause.  "You wouldn't believe the story, anyway."

Just then  ....(to be con't)

Robin and Worm (Con't)

"You will get your sun seeds, I promise!" said worm.

"OK," robin surrendered to her fate.  "Want me to lift you over there?"

"No thanks, I can crawl."

Robin watched as worm crawled, all too slowly for Robin to the entrance of the vole tunnel.  Worm started down the tunnel; then, he was gone.  For robin, it seemed like an eternity had passed before worm's snout appeared pushing one sunflower seed before it.  Robin snatched up the seed and devoured it in a not so lady-like fashion.  "Mmmmmmmmmmmm, this Is delicious!"  robin exclaimed, in spite of herself.

Meanwhile, worm had disappeared again into the bowels of 'voleland'.

Robin finished the tasty seed and began to wonder after worm again.

Robin and Worm (Con't)
"A vole has stored a large cache of seeds right down that hole."  "But," he continued, "They are too deep for you to get to them with your beak.  I will have to go down and push them up one at a time."

"Not so fast, worm!  How do I know you will return?"

"If you want the seeds, you will just have to trust me."

"I have a better idea.  I will hold on to your tail and you stretch out and pull back a seed."

"Too deep," replied worm.  "You are just going to have to trust me."

Worm had every intention of returning some seeds  Once in the hole he knew his escape was assured.

Finally, robin agreed.  She could taste that rich, nutty flavor.  "OK, worm, but don't try anything funny or I will hunt you every day.  And, we both know you can't get very far from this place very fast."
