My screening questions revealed that she wondered about obsessive worrying because her partner has brought home the new worry zapper and she had refused to try it.
“He accused me of being addicted to worry,” she said with a tone of righteous indignation.
“Are you?,” I inquired.
There was a long pause. “Well, I do worry a lot,” she said sheepishly."
“Would you give it up, if you knew how?” I inquired.
Another long pause.....
“I think so,” she finally confessed.
“Well then, perhaps we aught to make an appointment and explore ways of worrying less,” I offered.
Another long silence.....
“OK,” she finally spoke, “When are you free?”
“I have an opening next week on Tuesday at 3:00 pm,” I offered, glancing through my appointment book.
“That sounds OK,” she replied, “What should I bring?”
“Well,” I thought out loud, “start writing down every worry as it comes up. You can bring me that list.”
“OK,” she responded dutifully.
“See you on Tuesday afternoon at three, then,” I reaffirmed.
