Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Update of our story so far

* * * * * * *
Crow was completely out of breath when he landed. He had been up all night watching the Brotherhood in prayer and now he wanted to share the news, but he could not speak. The glen was filled with a solid mass of the gathered creatures. Firefly had warned everyone that Crow was coming. The irony was that just as Firefly had finished his announcement, they all heard Crow's cawing in the distance. Many years later, Firefly would remind anyone who brought up anything about those times, that he was the first to herald crow's imminent arrival.
Now three hundred eyes were focused on crow. Finally, he spoke, “The brothers have decided. They are taking Robin, Worm, Vole, Firefly, Raccoon and myself.” At first, there was no reaction as each one took it all in. Then there was a kind of silent applause and affirmation. The choices were good and everyone knew it. The hush was broken when Raccoon let out a whoop, “May this journey be blessed!”
It was Eagle who broke the ensuing reverie when he spoke: “The Brothers have chosen eight, not seven, when we consider that Camel with join us when we arrive.”
Creator said seven. What are we going to do?” Crow was sincere.
(to be continuing)

“We are going to take our seven and Francis can add Camel if he wishes when we arrive.” Eagle was resolute.
* * * * * *
Sebastian was the first to rise the next morning, followed shortly by Francis.
Sebastian had arranged a rendezvous before their departure. Francis was just an early riser. This day was like any other day for him. Like every other day with the exception that Francis was filled with great joy, thankfulness and anticipation at the prospect of finally beginning the great journey to the Holy Lands. This was to be Francis' first (but not the last) trip to the Holy Lands. He would meet Rumi and Rumi's teacher Shamsuddin of Tabriz.
Sebastian and Francis greeted one another with a wordless embrace. They shared some herbal tea; this in silence still. Sebastian gulped his down, almost burning his throat, and quickly mounted the Donkey for town. Although they rarely spoke of it, Francis knew where Sebastian was headed. He neither approved or disapproved of this relationship between a Brother and a woman. And, although Sebastian kept his relationship to himself for the most part, all the Brothers knew of it and some even whispered intimate details behind his back.
After sipping his tea for some time, Francis walked down a footpath to the river where he sat down to do his morning prayers and practices. He thought briefly of Sebastian and his Lover. But he quickly began to focus on the journey ahead. 'Could he keep all the Brothers safe? What unknown adventures awaited them? Would he measure up as their spiritual mentor?'
(To be continuing)

Francis prayed for wisdom and strength for the long journey and for the ministry that was sure to ensue. He had no idea how much his life was about to be transformed.
* * * * * *

Eagle did not sleep. None who were to accompany Francis' Band slept that night. Crow flew the entire shire announcing the news of who were chosen to go. Vole gathered seeds stuffing them in an old cocoon. Worm opened to the warm glow that had overtaken him and contemplated the meaning of this unfolding adventure. Raccoon slept soundly having made his peace with the world.
Eagle watched. He watched it all … with total acceptance of that which he witnessed. He saw Crow announcing the journey and its participants. He watched Vole gathering seed. He watched Worm glowing in prophecy. He watched Raccoon snoozing. And, he watched himself, watching.
Eagle had asked that all his traveling companions meet in the glen at dawn. The Sun was just transforming the purples and pinks into brilliant reds and oranges and yellows and whites when the last traveling companion arrived. It was Robin. She had spent the night tidying up her nest. Now she was ready for the adventure of her life.
Eagle had something to say to the gathered travelers. He smiled as only wise old eagles can. He gave a gentle stare to each before he spoke. Then, drawing three deep, calm breaths, he began to speak.
(to be continuing)

“Friends, this journey will test our abilities to remain friends and allies. There will be times when the Brothers need our help. There will be times when we will need each others' help. And there may be times when it is every one for themselves. But, whatever happens, know this: you chose this journey as it also chose you.” With that, Grandfather Eagle fell into silence.
Crow was busy trying to think of an appropriate cheer. Raccoon just yawned and nodded his head in approval. Worm drew in a deep breathe, for no one knew better than he, what breath arresting moments lay ahead.
Robin was also breathing deeply. She tried not to worry; even used positive self talk, “I can do this because Creator chose me. All that comes to me, comes as an expression of Creator's love. I can do all things through the Mystery that created me.”
Vole was packing her last seeds. “What help,” she wondered, “could she possibly be?” Firefly circled above. From his vantage point, all was in order and he was ready to go.
* * * * *
Francis had just finished tying his backpack to the mule when the animals arrived as a group. Vole scampered up the mule and climbed into a leather sack. Firefly, wanting someone to talk to, landed on the edge of the leather sack. Grandfather Eagle soared silently above, taking in the entire vista as the group began to move. Raccoon, deciding that a little morning exercise would be good, ambled along beside the mule. Robin flew circles just above the caravan. Worm manged to find a bucket with dirt, where Francis hoped to grow some fresh vegetables. Crow flew on ahead, too excited to rest.
Francis began singing a familiar folk tune to which he had written his own lyrics.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
|to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.”

Chapter 2
The Journey Begins

The sun was fully up when the band of Brothers and critters finally began to move. A few town folks were there to see them off. There were hugs and waves and shouts of encouragement.
Now, they moved, a silent band of unlikely travelers. The first hours were uneventful, with the exception of an occasional peasant wishing them “God-speed”. Francis was going through a metal checklist of supplies and possible future needs. When he was satisfied that they had all the supplies they needed, Francis, began to think about the gifts and liabilities of each of the Brothers on the journey.
There was his closest friend and confidant, Sebastian. He was solid enough with a wicked sense of humor. And, he was in love. “That could be a problem,” thought Francis.
Then there was Parsifal.
(to be continuing)

Francis was not quite sure what to think of Parsifal. On the one hand he was extremely intelligent; but he was lazy. He was always using his intelligence to figure out how to get out of things, especially work. What Francis knew in this moment was that everyone would have to pull their own weight on this journey.
Francis' speculations were interrupted abruptly by Parsifal, himself. “The wheel on our wagon is squeaking badly. I think we need to stop and grease it again.”
At first, Francis was unable to compute what he was being told. When he was able to make the shift of consciousness required by this intrusion into his inner space, he asked Parsifal to repeat himself.
“The right rear wheel on the wagon needs grease now!,” he said with some mild irritation at having to repeat himself.
“Certainly then, we must stop. We will pull into that field up ahead.”
So the caravan was halted almost as soon as it began.
(to be continuing)

With all the Brothers lifting on the back corner of the wagon, there was very little problem removing the wheel and daubing grease on the axle. Francis decided that it went so smoothly, that lunch was in order. Sebastian was the self appointed cook. He laid out a spread of bread, cheese, olives, and wine. Francis broke the bread and offered the wine to commemorate The Lord's death and resurrection.
Forty minutes passed from the beginning of their repair to moving again. Francis was pleased. The critters took the break to eat as well. Their conversation, purely speculative, ranged from who would be the greatest help on the journey to which Brothers were their favorites. Sebastian came out number one on that score. That was because he had a natural woman as his lover.
The unlikely caravan moved toward the east steadily until just after a golden-pink sunset. Then, they pitched camp before darkness set in like a gentle glove. They camped next to a beautiful spring-fed brook. Each Brother had brought his own bedroll, so after a hastily prepared meal of venison and corn cakes, the Brothers dropped off one by one to their chosen sleeping grounds.
(to be continuing)

It is very true that critters have different sleep patterns. Raccoon was up most of the night so he could sleep the next day. Robin was up at the crack of dawn, as was Crow. Vole, like Raccoon was a night owl, as was Firefly. Worm mere took short snoozes all night and all day. During his waking hours he tunneled and digested earth and compost. It seems that Sebastian had created a special pot of dirt and compost that fit neatly on the Donkey's side, and worm was in seventh heaven.
Francis was up before dawn, follwed shortly by Sebastian who had had a hard night sleeping. He was still tired, but the same excitement that had kept him awake during the night, now drove him to greet the dawn standing.
Sebastian greeted Francis with a hardy hug. Francis was glad that Sebastian was up early. He had wanted to share a concern before the trip, but the preparations had left no opportunity. Now, they were alone. Francis cleared his throat. He began, “Sebastian, my brother, I have wanted to share a concern with you.”
(to be continuing)

Sebastian squirmed a bit inside, but his outer demeanor was matter-of-fact. “Brother Francis, you know you can speak to me about anything,” he said with just a hint of tension in his voice.
“Good!” Francis considered carefully how to say his concern. “I am just a little worried about Parsifal.”
“Why?”
“I do not question his commitment to our venture, but I am wondering if Parsifal is just a little too excited about this mission.”
“In what way?”
“Well, I overheard him talking with Jonathon before we began our journey. He was talking about killing Muslims.”
“Oh, sweet Jesus!” Sebastian was genuinely shocked and surprised. “Would you like me to speak with him?”
“No, I think I should talk with him …. and think the sooner, the better.”
“Yes, I agree.”
Francis turned and walked away slowly, a prayer, just slightly moving his lips.
(to be continuing)
* * * * * *
Grandfather Eagle had overheard the entire conversation between Francis and Sebastian. Now he too was worried. None of the animal kingdom could understand humans in their willingness and increasing ability to kill one another. He was wondering whether to tell the others when Crow landed right next to him. “Good morning, Grandfather.”
“Yes, it is,” replied Grandfather Eagle.
Crow noticed Grandfather Eagle's energy. “Are you alright? I sense some worry.”
“No, I am fine. I am just a little worried about a conversation I just overheard.”
“Oh, what was that?”
“I just heard that the one they call Parsifal was talking about killing another Hu-man!”
“How insane!” Crow was genuinely incensed. “Is there anything we can do?”
Grandfather Eagle thought for a moment before spoke.
(to be continuing)
“I think we should watch this one, Parsifal when we arrive.” It was all Grandfather Eagle could think to say.
“Absolutely!” Crow agreed.
“I think we must tell the others,” said Grandfather Eagle, thoughtfully.
“Absolutely,” Crow repeated himself.
* * * * * *
Francis found Parsifal by the brook that had occasioned their choice to spend the night there. “Good morning, did you sleep well?”
“Like a stone,” Parsifal replied sleepily.
“Good!” said Francis, trying to sound nonchalant. “I am hoping we make some miles today.”
“Looks like a great day for traveling …. shall I roust everyone?”
“Not just yet,” Francis paused for a moment, then continued, “let's talk first.”
Parsifal looked deeply into Francis' eyes, looking for some hint of what was to come. Francis looked away for a moment; then made full eye contact.
(to be continuing)

Sebastian overheard you say that you would just like a chance to kill an infidel. Is this what you said essentially?
Parsifal took a gulpping breath in and the choked on his own spittle causing him a fit of coughing which, simply, he could not control. Francis was about to take that as his answer of 'no contest' when he suddenly managed to get out, “Well …... Yes.”
Francis smiled lovingly, genuinely at Parsifal. “My friend, we are making this journey at some sacrifice of our well being, in order that we many minister to the sick and dying from both sides of this conflict.”
Parsifal nodded.
“If you are not one hundred percent behind this, our stated mission, then you must turn back. Do you fully understand what I am saying to you?”
Parsifal nodded a second time.
Francis' smile broadened even further. In the silence that followed, both men starred softly at the earth.
Francis was listening to his inner heart to see if there we more to share. There was.
(to be continuing)

“One more thing, Brother Parsifal,” Francis was matter-of-fact. “I want you to find the source of the anger that resulted in such an outrageous statement for a Brother to make.”
“Francis, I was drunk and the talk that night was all about wasting Infidels. I just lost my center.”
“Find out why?”
* * * * * *
The critters were all up and ready to go or sleeping in their travel assigned spots. Crow made sure he was watching the conversation between Francis and Parsifal. He memorized every detail of the scene and every word spoken. Now Crow joined Grandfather Eagle who was roosting on the top of the tallest cedar.
“I heard the entire conversation,” Crow was delighted to share his news (and views).
“Did it go well?”
“I think it did! …. Francis asked him to get to the source of his Soul anger.”
“I know the root of his anger,” Grandfather Eagle replied nonchalantly.
(to be continuing)

“Hu-mans are a strange species,” Grandfather Eagle continued. “They do very odd things raising their young. They use a rearing technique unknown to any other species. They call it guilt and punishment.”
“What is that?”, Crow had never heard of such a thing.
Well, punishment is kind of like when we have to warn and protect our offspring from an imminent danger. Sometimes we must be physicallt rough with them.” Grandfather Eagle paused for a long time searching for the right way to describe guilt. Finally he said, “Guilt is so foreign to our experience that I have no analogy to explain it. In fact, I am not sure I understand it.”
“Surely, you can say something about it.”
“I will try,” Grandfather Eagle closed his eyes and tried to think about guilt.

The silent meditation lasted almost twenty minutes. Franjcis noticed a few of the Brothers beginning to fidget and otherwise show their growing discomfort. He stood up and began to walk slowly around the circles. In front of each Brother, he stopped and placed both hands gently but firmly on both shoulders while looking solidly into their eyes. Only when he had given darshan to each Brother did he speak:

“I see no dissent to Brother Sebastian's choices. If any of you wants to add to his discernment, speak now.”
No one spoke, so Francis continued, “I am taking it that we are all of one mind, then.”

Someone in the outer circle began humming a familiar tune. Soon all the Brothers had joined in. Now, they were singing the words softly:

“We are One in The Spirit,
We are One in The Lord.
We are One in The Spirit,
We are One in The Lord.
And we pray that All Unity
May one day be restored.
And they will know we are Brothers
by Our Love, By our Love.
Yes, they will know we are Brothers by our Love.”

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Sebastian suggests his choices

The Brothers leaned forward. Francis continued, “I almost forgot. Grandfather Eagle insisted that one animal be chosen from our destination ....” Francis paused.

“A camel!” The Brothers spoke it out loud together as if they had be reciting the Office. So, that was decided. Now there were only four more to select.

Sebastian stood up and looked around the gathering slowly, making eye contact with each Brother. Only then did he speak, “I have been among our animal friends and heard much of their own deliberations trying to choose representatives. I have settled my own choices from hanging out with these precious beings.”
Sebastian stopped and looked around the gathered brothers again. Parsifal spoke up. “Well, don't keep us in suspense! …. Who are your choices?”

“Well, it seems that Worm has formed a deep friendship with Robin …. which is quite amazing since they would naturally be enemies. In fact, they formed their own Brother/Sisterhood which includes Crow and Vole. It seems to me that these four would travel easily together. The birds could all fly and Vole would take up so little room.” I would pick these four.”

There was a long silence as the Brothers considered Sebastian's suggestions. Finally, Francis spoke up. “Sebastian has spoken well. Let us continue to sit in silent meditation to consider Sebastian's suggestion.”

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Trying to choose

Sebastian kept a respectable silence and then continued with a prayer of thanksgiving:

“Thank, Dear Father, for that Thou dost vouchsafe to feed us with the live giving spiritual body and blood of our Lord and Savior, Jesus, The Christ. You promise to us in these holy mysteries, that we are One Body, in this One Love. Send us now into the world in Peace, that we may love and serve all.  In the name of our Precious Savior, Jesus Christ, Out Lord; Amen!”

Silence was kept again. Finally, Francis broke the silence, “Brothers, let us discern with One Mind, the will of Holy Mystery.”

Again, silence! Sebastian broke the silence this time, “We must take Grandfather Eagle …. and the glowing worm, of course.”

There was a murmur of assent. Now, Francis spoke, “That leaves five more choices.”

“We need a four legged.” It was Parsifal who made the suggestion. “And perhaps a flying insect.”

“We have the donkey!” Sebastian protested.

“I wish we had a camel here in these parts'” a Brother suggested from the outer circle.

“I know what we should do,” suggested Francis.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Communion

* * * * * * *
The last Brother arrived just before a vibrant, golden-pink sunset. Francis asked Sebastian to lead the service; he wanted to observe the process rather than lead it. Francis had fasted all day in seclusion in preparation for their decision. The service began just as the sun disappeared below the horizon. The service began with some hearty hymn singing:

“Blessed be the tie that binds
our hearts in Christian love.
The fellowship of kindred souls
is like to Thine above.”

Sebastian began the service, “The Peace of the Lord be with you!”

“And also with you!,” the Brothers responded enthusiastically.

Sebastian lifted a loaf of freshly baked bread. “On the night in which our Lord was betrayed, he broke bread, blessed it saying, 'This is my Body broken for you. Take and eat, all of you.'” He broke the bread, handing each Brother a large piece. Silence was kept until the last Brother received his piece. Then they all reverently ate their bread.

Then Sebastian lifted a chalice filled with wine and blessed it saying, “Likewise, after supper he took the cup and blessed it saying ' this is my Blood shed for you for the forgiveness of sin. Drink this, all of you.'” The Brothers passed the chalice, each taking a healthy draught.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Preparing to choose

The Brotherhood gathering would cost them another day, which was frustrating to Francis and irritating to Sebastian who always jumped in first and then considered the consequences. The next morning the word went out. The Brotherhood was to gather in Assisi that evening for prayers and communion.

Francis spent the day in seclusion, praying for guidance. He was able to discern a clear directive to take Grandfather Eagle with him. “Surely God must have a reason for wanting these animals along,” he thought. He was sure they would be an extra burden. What he could not know in this moment was just how much help they would prove to be.
* * * * * * *

In the forest, Crow brought the news that a decision would be forthcoming that very evening. The critters began to gather in the glen in the late afternoon. Speculation ran high. Worm slept through it all. Vole did not even bother to show up; she focused her efforts on gathering more seeds and nuts. Crow returned to Assisi to observe the prayer meeting. Robin busied herself building a new nest. Raccoon watched the growing assembly from the vantage of his lair.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Francis get the news that he must choose

Francis was tightening the last rope on the donkey when the news arrived from the circle in the glen. Neither Francis nor Sebastian had spent much thought about which animals would accompany them. Now they had to choose six before they could leave.

Sebastian suggested that they just draw straws. “It would be quick and fair,” he said matter-of-factually. Francis had to remind him that after drawing straws to select Mathias to replace Judas, came the Pentecost and Baptism of the Holy Spirit. After that time Christians always relied on the Holy Spirit to give guidance.

“How do you propose we proceed?” Sebastian asked, somewhat irritated.

“We gather the Brothers and hold a service”, Francis was quick to answer.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Let Francis do it

“Creator must have a purpose for our going along on this crazy Hu-man war-adventure. This certainly is none of our affair! Not one of us would ever consider committing such a crazy game. Can you imagine committing such a crazy game among ourselves? Imagine birds and rabbits at war” Eagle laughed and all gathered laughed with him.

The laughing continued for some time. No one could imagine such a crazy thing. Despite the centuries of witnessing such insane Hu-man behavior, the animals had never gotten used to the idea of war. The laughter finally subsided. Grandfather Eagle flew up to a branch above the podium. “Friends, Relations, …we must let Francis and his Brothers decide who will accompany them.”

There was no murmur of ascent, but the hush spoke a resounding yes. So, as Venus rose in the Eastern sky, and the sun set in the West, the gathering broke up and the animals returned to their lairs.

Francis and Sebastian just managed to finish their packing as the sun set in the West and Venus rose in the Eastern sky.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Trying to choose

Crow breathed an audible sigh of relief. “I say it is time to choose!” Crow sounded very authoritative. He turned to Eagle. “How shall we choose?”

Grandfather Eagle looked slowly around the group. “Who would like to represent us?”

Almost everyone took a step forward. Grandfather Eagle laughed heartily, “I see. Well, my only requisite is this: one of our representatives must be a resident of that region, chosen after we arrive.” From this one sentence, everyone know that Grandfather Eagle would be going on the journey.

Robin, from her perch, spoke next, “It is clear that almost all of us want to go, so how will we ever be able to agree on the six? Also, we have no way to communicate a private ballot. Perhaps we should just trust Grandfather to decide”

A murmur of assent arose in the glen.

Eagle let the stirring subside before he spoke. “That only sounds like a good idea,” he finally said. “You are all forgetting one thing.”

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Firefly speaks his mind

It was high and shrill! But more than the sound which was so shrill as to be irritating, it was the words that brought everyone's attention to focus. At first, no one could locate the source of the sound. It seemed to come from somewhere above the circle. Then, a flicker of light shot out from the center of the sound source and all could see it was Brother Firefly:

“In all your deliberations, you have left out an entire kingdom …. us insects. At least one of us should be on this journey! Do you not realize there are more of us on the planet than any other critter? Also, I have not once heard anyone considering the fact that you are going to a desert. The representatives you choose must be able to survive in that climate!”

Firefly paused to let the import of his words sink in. Silence, once again reigned. It was Grandfather Eagle who finally spoke, “Brother Firefly has spoken well. These are critical to our choosing.”

“There are few of us that can survive the desert climate!” It was Crow shouting from his position next to Grandfather Eagle. He was worried that now, he would not be chosen.

“This is also true. But I have spoken to Brother Francis. He assures me that whichever critters go, the Brothers will provide food and shelter for them.”

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Grandfather Eagle holds silence

Jay left the podium immediately and quickly took a spot in the outermost circle. Crow inched closer to Eagle. Grandfather Eagle took the time to make eye contact with each being in the gathering. He spoke no further.
At first, the silence really was golden and it seem as if all were coming to one mind and heart. But then, Mouse began to feel some awkwardness; he started to fidget. There is something about the energy of fidgeting that multiplies in a crowd. Rabbit began to thump her foot. Cat began to lick her tail with some considerable energy. Crow began shifting his weight from one leg to the other.

Surely, Grandfather Eagle would have something wise and helpful to say. But, Grandfather Eagle kept the silence. Five solid minutes passed before the silence was broken. The sound which shattered the silence shocked the entire gathering to full attention.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Grandfather Eagle presides

Grandfather Eagle and Crow did not arrive in Assisi until the final day of packing for Francis and Sebastian. Jay had returned the day before. The Council had been meeting for a day before Grandfather's return. There was little agreement as to who would be chosen. Raccoon kept his confidence during all the discussions. He continued to hold back, confident that he would be chosen in the end.

Grandfather Eagle flew to the center of the gathering and landed with flare. His perfect landing interrupted a long-winded speech by Jay who had been trying to convince the gathered crowd of his skills for the trip. A hush fell over the circle. Jay looked behind and there was Grandfather Eagle, standing in majestic silence. Jay stopped in mid sentence.

All waited for Grandfather Eagle to speak. He looked around in silence making eye contact with each critter in the circle. Finally, he spoke, “I understand we have some hard decisions to make.”

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Crow finds Grandfather Eagle

Crow looked up and to the north. There, high above him, Grandfather Eagle was diving straight on toward the river below. Crow watched in a mesmerized amazement as Eagle waited until the very last possible moment to pull out of his dive, talons outstretched toward the water. Then, with hardly a ripple, Eagle plucked a salmon from the water, and with powerful wings, pulled himself into the air.

Crow would have applauded if he could, but he was content to caw five times rapidly as a kind of Crow accolade. The sound shattered the river channel. Eagle responded immediately by arcing up and to the left circling back toward crow. “Brother Crow!” he shouted as he circled around. “Great to see you … What brings you this far north?”

“A Council has been called and you are need to preside. Creator would have us choose only seven to accompany Brother Francis to the Holy Crusades to minister to the injured of all sides. There are already many disputes. Can you fly with me now?”

“Of course, we must go straight away. The longer a dispute remains unresolved, the worse it can get!”
So the pair headed south with Eagle literally flying circles so that Crow could keep up.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Search for Grandfather Eagle

* * * * *

In the glen, the sun was just rising in the East. Jay had demanded the podium and was in the midst of an impassioned speech:

“So, in conclusion, I can fly farther, faster, and more skillfully than any but Grandfather Eagle and Uncle Hawk … oh right; …. and Cousin Owl. I must be allowed to accompany Brother Francis on his mission.”

“Where is Grandfather Eagle? Surely we can make no decision without him!” Someone shouted it from the back rows. Crow and Jay immediately volunteered to find him and flew off in opposite directions, with Crow choosing the North up-river search, and Jay the South. So it was that the critters broke up their all night discussion and returned to their homes.

For the first hour Crow saw no signs of any Eagles. There were no fish skeletons, no sign of nest building, no shadows soaring high above. Crow decided to take a short rest. Hl landed in the tallest pine in order to watch over the whole river valley. Just as he was actually considering returning to the glen, Crow heard the shrill cry of an eagle.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Who will go?

A great murmur arose in the glen; 'Who would go with Francis and Sebastian? ' Crow had already determined that he must go. Who could stop him? Of course, Worm would go; they needed his glow-ability. Robin was worried about Crow. She knew hew would insist on going and she wondered how many wingeds Creator would permit on the journey.

Raccoon was sure his talents would be needed. He smiled to himself, a knowing smile of sweet satisfaction. He would not campaign; he would merely wait for them to come to him, seeking his talents for the trip.
Vole had already given up any hope of going. Surely her eyesight would keep her from the adventure. She sighed quietly as she listened to Rabbit go on and on about his reasons for being needed on the trek.

Francis and Sebastian were deep in a planning conversation. It was decided that they would gather supplies for three days including tents, food, water, a mule (not to be counted as one of the seven), and medical supplies. Sebastian was to leave in the morning for his home town, Folignio to gather donations. The would meet up in Assisi to begin their journey to the Holy Lands together. Enrique would join them from his home town of Perugia.

The planning was done. Both men were exhaused, so they embraced and went their separate ways to sleep.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - A Message for Francis

“I have a message for Francis!” Francis looked up and his eyes snapped open. Worm went on, “Francis you are to go to this Crusade and minister to the wounded of both sides. There you shall meet my servan know as Mevlana.”

Sebastian blurted out, “I have heard of this one! He is very holy and most say, very strange!”
Worm 's glow diminished significantly. “I want my critters to accompany Francis. Choose seven to go with his band. Make sure they represent all my animal kingdom; the plant kingdom will represent itself.” With that, Worm fell in a heap, exhausted.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Worm's Speech

“My Brothers and Sisters, Cousins, Elders, My Children, One and All, you are all so very precious to me. In every step of my creating, I have had you …. each of you, in mind. There has never been a single moment in this continuing unfolding of my perfect universe, that has not been perfect .... nor will there be. How can there be? Only my Creation exists! Anything you have created in worry, stress or fear has no existence, save in your own limited mind.”

“You have seen both the heights and depths of my On-going-ness. Hu-man, my highest expression thus far of love and conscious awareness …. you have seen Hu-man's greatness here in my servants, Francis and his band; and you have seen hunting for mere sport and worse depravities.” But never has it not all been perfect for each and all.”

“So my children, I am asking you to Trust Me. Trust My Love. Trust My Providence. Take your place on the great mandala of My continuing creation.”

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Worm glows again

Sebastian and Francis looked at one another, remembering the picture of the Captain with pee dripping down his nose, and both began to laugh uproariously. And to the extent that they are able, the critters join in the hilarity.

But, when Worm began to glow again, a hush came over the den which spread to the entire glen. Worm himself, was so involved in the hilarity that he did not notice the glow beginning. But when silence reigned, he looked up and all eyes were focused on him! Worm gulped and cleared his throat ( a long throat to clear ). He blinked. What was he supposed to say; 'The Glowing Prophet' they were calling him.

Worm cleared his throat a second and then a third time again. He had nothing to say. He wondered what the glowing meant this time. He decided to trust the sign and just open his mouth with no forethought. And more words came:

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Vole and Crow share their witness

Crow and Vole reached Raccoon's den about the same time. All the critters within ten miles were waiting for news. In the field in front of Coon's tree, there was standing room only. A hush fell over the gathered crowd. Of course, Vole had not seen Crow's spectacular dive and flutter, so it was perfectly natural for her to begin the recounting of events:

“He spoke so good!” she exclaimed. There were many who left the line when he was done speaking.” She hesitated a moment, “He was very convincing.”

Crow interrupted, “Vole you shoulda stayed till the end! I was stupendous! I dove straight into the Captain's face! You shoulda seen me!”

Vole resented the interruption, but she did not let on. At any rate, her report was no match for Crow's dive bombing exploit. “The truth is,” he was saying, “I broke up the gathering!”

Worm was incredulous, “But did you have to piss in his face!?” All the critters laughed and even Francis smiled as he walked up to the tree.

“Truly, crow sent everyone home with a great story to tell.” Another great din of laughter arose.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Francis' Prayer

“Oh Holy God, Creator of all that is, I pray for my brother, Captain Jon who has suffered humiliation at the hand of Brother Crow. Watch over his family while he must be away. Protect him from harm and peril.

Guide me on your straight and narrow path. If I am to minister to those who crusade, make it clear to me. There are not enough hours in a single day to sing your praises adequately. I would serve Thee with all my body, heart and soul.

Where there is this fear and hatred, let me so love the better. You are my light and my shield. In You, I find my rest and peace. You are One, Oh Holy Creator, and by any name, You are always the same God.

Bless this Earth and all who dwell upon Her. All these things, I pray in and through our Lord and Savior, Jesus, The Christ.

Amen and Amin”

Now, Francis sat in silence.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Crow pulls a fast one

“Captain, I applaud your valor and bravery in the face of pain-filled death. I pray protection on you and a safe return. Still, I must here take my stand against all unholy war a priori includes all war. And I welcome all men to my brotherhood of believers, servants of the Living Christ.”

Just as the words, 'Living Christ' were uttered, Crow dove full on from his perch above the proceedings as if he had been shot. As he reached the exact eye level of the captain's face, he began flapping his wings frantically so as to avoid certain death should he touch the ground at that speed. At the same time, he released his bladder and the Captain had an unwelcome shower of pee.

The Captain's face turned bright red as he realized what had just happened. He descended from the town platform in great haste. Crow recovered totally from his free fall and flew off toward the woods. All is well that ends well and the truth is that there were no more recruits signed that day. Everybody who knew him growing up said that he had always been a rascal.

But, Francis did not feel much like a rascal; he felt the embarrassment of the Captain and withdrew into the woods to pray for him. According to Sebastian who was just able to keep up with him, his prayer went something like:

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - The Captain Replies

Actually, that is not quite accurate. What happened was shocking and surprising to all but Francis. Crow had been listening patiently to the Captain's rebuttal to Francis' speech. He went on and on about Holy Mother Church and Francis' duty to defend her as a monk of Christ. His exact words were: “Francis of Assisi, I have known of you for some years now, and now I see that you can be as fierce as I have been told when the occasion demands.”

“I beg your indulgence to know why I a man of family and peaceful in my fields, should take up the sword and spear on His Holiness's behalf. I will have you to know that I have the fullest blessing of my dearly beloved wife to pursue this noble and valorous mission. I fear neither scimitar nor camel. Our cause is as just as it is holy!”

Francis gazed into the Captain's eyes throughout his rebuttal. Now he continued that gaze, soft, but disarming. He was silent for a long time just gazing. Finally, his eyes hardened just slightly as he drew a deep breath to speak.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Crow and Vole get the skinny

Crow listed to Francis' speech from a sycamore tree right in the town square. Vole listened from just below that same tree. Neither had ever heard of a Crusade before, but it sounded rather ugly. It was hard for the critters to imaging a species attacking and killing members of the same species. But then Hu-mans were always doing crazy things, like hunting for sport.

Crow could not help cawing approval when Francis finished his plea. The Hu-mans did not even notice his outburst as they were too busy murmuring among themselves. Vole headed back to the critters waiting on the edge of the woods by way of a series of his relatives' tunnels. Crow stayed on to hear whatever might ensue. Crow was not disappointed. What happened next was shocking but not surprising.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Francis speaks against the Crusade

“Love your neighbors and pray for your enemies that you may be at peace with all and within. What part of 'my kingdom is not of this world' do you not understand? I have never called for a holy war and those who follow my Brother Mohammed are my Brothers as well. The future of our human race on this earth is to make plowshares and pruning hooks, not swords.”

There was an audible murmur from the crowd that had gathered. Had Francis now lost his mind? Every one knew that Jerusalem must be freed from the Infidels. 'Wasn't this the party-going upstart who had haunted the streets of Assisi just a year ago?' But there were a few in the crowd that heard his message and quietly slipped away from the recruiting line.

To these few, what Francis said made sense. And it was from these few, that the heart of the Franciscans would come.

* * * * * * *

Vole was selected by the others to follow Francis and Sebastian into town. It was felt the she would the best at hiding and since the story of her last encounter with Francis was told so well, she would be the best reporter. Crow finally convinced them all that his perspective from the trees would also be valuable, so he went along as well.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Francis' Speech

“Brothers, Sisters, Neighbors, and Friends, You all know me. I grew up here in this Province. You all know that I was a party animal and a heathen in my beliefs. You know how that I was touched by the Lord of Life to the effect of a great repentance.

You know how I voluntarily surrendered my earthly wealth and possessions. You know how that the Lord has added to my friends, a group of like minded Brothers who have taken vows with me to serve The Lord forever
.
I stand before you today with a heavy heart. But, that is only half my story. I also offer you the gift of Our Lord's vision for this earth. It is a vision where all live as brothers and sisters; where none goes hungry, where our four legged brothers and sisters and the wingeds live in such harmony that our Lord's vision of the lion lying down with the lamb has been fulfilled.”

I pronounce to you that this Holy War is no Holy War; but an expression of human fear and ignorance gone feral. Our God is the only God, the God of all including our Muslem Brothers and Sisters. This is the cry of Our Lord and Savior to this generation:”

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Francis goes to town

“Let's go!”, he said abruptly after a long silence. He grabbed his walking staff and stepped off for town. Sebastian managed to stay right at his side as they half walked and half ran. As they reached the road to town, the entourage of critters stopped, preferring the cover of the wood.

Francis and Sebastian, walked boldly into the square and confronted the Captain directly, simply, with no rancor. “If Jesus is Lord of all and His Kingdom is not OF this world, then why in the name of God do we raise an army to go against 'People of the Book'? They serve the same God as we.”

The Captain was taken completely off guard by the boldness of Sebastian and Francis. His mind was reeling; words were scattered in suddenly scarce. Finally, he managed to squeak out, “I serve Mother Church.”
Francis' response is a classic Christian apology. We quote a part here:

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Francis' Prayer

Francis lifted his hands in a gesture of prayer and supplication:

“Forgive us our dark ignorance.
Raise us to the Unity we are."

Then, raising his hands even higher, he continued:

“Give us eyes of love
to see through fear's disguise.
Direct us daily, in our service to all.”

Francis' prayer was cut short by a deafening boom, followed by a conch wailing its call to assembly. It was the recruitment company headed by Captain Nigel Hawking, a fierce looking scarred man with a heart of soft down. His family had migrated to Italy two generations back. Now, here he was, in the town square, calling an assembly of the able-bodied.

Francis finished his prayer:

“Oh precious Savior,
grant that we may be a blessing.
Wherever there are hurting,
let us bring comfort and healing.
Grant us you help
Raise us above our petty differences.
Amen”

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Sebastian shares his news

“Come sit and tell me all of it.” Francis gripped Sebastian's arm and threw his other arm around his back. They sat with their feet stretched toward the open meadow, their backs against the Coon's den tree.
“What news have you?” Francis gazed deeply into Sebastian’s eyes.

“There is a new Crusade being mounted in villages as small as Hoovenshire. Some of the brothers want to join and fight. Mathias has forbid anyone, save me, to leave the compound.”

Francis countenance turned dark, his eyebrows thrust down and forward; his mouth curled in a frown. “Saints preserve us, when will we follow our Master's way of peace?”

Sebastian opened his mouth as if he had an answer to Francis' question. Instead, he asked a question, “Will we go to minister to the injured?”

Francis stood and looked at nothing in particular as if his vision had turned inner and his eyes were now transmitters rather than receivers. He thought one way then its opposite. Finally, his face lifted as one ready to speak.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - All breathe a sigh of relief

The entire woods including the rocks and plants breathed a sigh of relief when the Hu-man began humming. This was followed by a deep voice singing a haunting melody and sweet lyric:

“Gentle is the rain
of your sweet Love, Oh Creator.
Soft is the warmth of your Sun.”

It was one Francis' brother monks. Francis joined his singing immediately. Vole knew the song from her experience of the mandala feeding. She joined in:

“Rain so gentle, Sun so sweet
Blessing us all in Light.
Rain and Sun blessing us all.”

Now, a figure stepped into the clearing; it was Sebastian. He was tall, bearded; it was hard to tell his girth under the loose brown robe he was wearing. He and Francis hugged first on one side, then on the other. “I bring news!” whispered Sebastian.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - More Trouble?

Robin was the next to join in. She began chanting, “Praise Mystery!” in counterpoint to Francis. Bear was beginning to get caught up in the spirit; he forgot his earlier shame and began dancing in circles throwing his front paws in the air as he turned. Worm began to glow again. He joined in the song:

“Praise to Mystery
Praise to The One.”
“Praise to Mystery
Praise to the Sun.”

Now the gathered critters began, one by one, to dance and sing. The whole scene became rather raucous. Francis, lying on the grass, continued singing at the top of his lungs. The celebration raved on, until without warning there was a snapping sound of a stick cracking under the foot of a hu-man. All stopped, frozen with ears tuned to the woods. “Another hunter?”

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Joyous Celebration

For the beauty of the Earth;
For the glory of the sky;
For the Love which from our birth
Over and around us lies.
Lord of All to Thee We raise,
This our hymn of Grateful Praise.”

Robin closed her eyes as she sang a sweet descant to the next verse.

Tears welled up in Francis 'eyes. He reached out to Robin, gently stroking her head feathers. The hymn came to a softer and softer level. Finally, there was no sound at all, and the words moved through each according to their need.

Worm began glowing again.... “Truly the Mystery makes sense: that all Mystery's Creations are sacred and have their allotted place on this journey. Francis, we are grateful for you and your Brotherhood.”
Francis did an exaggerated pirouette, laughing heartily as he ended his spin in a heap on the grass. Suddenly he began shouting with joy, “All Praise to Mystery!!!”

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Crow raises a question

Friends, brothers and sisters all, we have witnessed the old way and how it was on the earth. I declare and affirm that the new day has dawned! We are to walk together in love, harmony, and beauty as much as is possible from this day and forevermore. There will be setbacks like we have all just experienced. I affirm in deepest heart of my heart that this hunter shall not have died in vain.“

Crow, still the skeptic, asked, “What are we to do when the hunters fill the springtime woods?”
Francis looked at Crow directly and offered his reasoned view, “You are the sentinels of the forest. Keep vigilant watch and give the hunters not one offering. When there is nothing to hunt, hunting shall die of its own.”
For the first time that day, Crow was 'heart-tagged'1 His voice softened, “We can do that! None shall be harmed on our watch from this day forth.”
Francis smiled broadly. “Crow,” he said with exuberance, “You are going to be a great Apostle of The New Earth.”

No, said Crow, “I am Her Guardian.“

Then there was silence. An uninterested observer might have easily concluded that that each one was contimplating their own role for the New Earth.

Finally, Francis addressed Vole. “Remember the food mandala? Vole cl;osed her eyes and smiled. The singing, the sweet layout of the feeding circle, the sweet taste of the carefully selected food. …. And the vision before her very eyes of a mountain lion and lamb feeding side by side.

Vole began the singing, but only seconds passed before all had joined in. They sang: “ …..

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Francis Offers Compassion and Forgiveness

Francis turned from grief into angry frustration. Bear knew he has made a huge mistake. Shame burned within him. He returned to the circle slowly, hesitantly, on all fours head hanging down eyes focused on the earth. Francis was now having a full blown temper tempest within. He opened his mouth ready to add to bear's growing shame. But as the words formed in slow motion in his head, Francis' eyes met Bear's; He saw the humiliation, shame and contrition and his anger melted into full acceptance and compassion.

“You saved lives,” he said with all the compassion he was feeling. Presently, Bear lifted his head and offered each in the circle a force smile. Eventually, he felt genuine and his smile began to beamj from the heart.

“One day all killing will be rendered meaningless and the lion shall lie down with the lamb.” As Francis began to focus on his breath, it slowed and became more full. One, could see that he was ready to address them all again.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Francis Weeps

Suddenly there was chaos. The critters scattered in every direction. Francis cried out, “Stop in the name of Christ the King!” His plea was answered by another arrow that barely missed his head. Francis dove behind Raccoon's tree. The gathering inside Raccoon's tree, huddled together in the deepest part of the den.

Unknown to Francis and his friends inside the tree, Bear had circled around behind the hunter. With one swat, the hunter lay dead at his feet. Bear let out a deafening growl, and then there was silence throughout the woods.

Francis stepped out from behind the tree, weeping - weeping for the dead buck and hunter, but weeping even more for the grief of knowing how long it might take to realize his vision across the earth. The critters began slowly to return to the tree from their various hiding places.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Francis Speaks

Friends, brothers and sisters, Crow has a legitimate concern. After all, our ways of survival have been going on for tens of thousands of years. We are all so used to being the hunter or the hunted. I am not naive to think this revolution of the heart will happen over night all over our Mother earth.

I do know that the revolution begins with us, the Humans. I know that Creator promised that one day the lion would lie down with the lamb. I know that in this forest, the revolution has already taken place. None in this woods need ever worry about going hungry as long as I or my brothers are alive. The food circle that Sister Vole described is happening every day in this woods and many others. Wherever my brotherhood thrives, all eat and none go hungry.”

The arrogance of humanity has been broken. I have dedicated my life to serving all Creator's creatures and to leading my brothers and sisters on the humble path of true service to the whole earth.”
Just then, there was whoosh and thud as an arrow pierced the heart of a buck who had been standing in the rear of the gathering of critters listening to Francis. He fell instantly to the ground.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Crow raises a question

Crow interrupted, “I could go for that! I'm kinda tired of scavenging for my daily meals.”

Francis smiled. Worm smiled. Robin smiled. Raccoon smiled. Crow cawed and the began laughing. All, including Francis, agreed scavenging for food was not fun. Francis was the next to start laughing, and soon all were sharing the mirth.

Suddenly Crow stopped laughing and got real serious. “And just how is this all going to happen?” Francis stopped laughing but not, smiling. He scratched his head slowly, thoughtfully. It was suddenly very quiet. Not one critter moved. All eyes were fixed on Francis. At last, he spoke:

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Francis Speaks

But no words came from his mouth. Instead, he spoke with nhis heart and mind. Each critter heard his thought in their own speak. This is the gist of what he said:

Brothers and Sisters, All, I speak to yu not from the vantage of my little self but as a vessel of The One who has claimed my life and my allegiance . I have seen the day of harmony on earth. I have seen a lion lie down with a lamb. The time is at hand. The Lord of Heaven and Earth, The Son of Man has come into His Glory!”

I declare to you this day that from this moment hence, all creation will live in Love, Harmony and Beauty and that abundance is assured for all.”

The food I provide is but a sign of the age of light and love. We have entered into the Kingdom of Light where all will find their purpose in service. No more predator and prey.... no more week and strong, …. no more hungry days and nights.”

Francis heard the rustling and twittering behind him, but he ignored the sounds and launched into a booming song:
May the blessings of God
rest upon you.
May God's Peace abide with You. you
May God's Presence
|Illuminate your Heart.

Now and forevermore!”
As he sang, Francis made eye contact with each critter, bird and reptile. All gave him their rapt attention. Finally, the words stopped and Francis just continued humming the tune. The animals drew instinctively closer until the bravest lay their heads on hi sandle covered feet.
At length, the humming stopped and Francis raised his arms toward the horizon and there was absolute and utter silence. Frances cleared his throat to speak:

My friends,” he said, still grinning, “Be of good cheer, for what Vole witnessed those months ago, is now happening by the hands of my Brothers in the Faith all over the countryside. The sacred mandala of 'Christ Awareness' is being spread in village after village and glen after glen.”

Worm began to glow red with satisfied excitement that his vision was being so quickly fulfilled. Vole still had a Cheshire grin from her vivid, ecstatic recall of events months before. Robin was eyeballing Raccoon's hulled acorns, drying in the corner. Crow was pacing, worried about his relations in a far nation. Raccoon was having a munch attack and was totally absorbed in cracking open some walnuts he had gathered just that morning.
By now the critters that had seen Francis walking through the wood, had caught up and were gathering just outside Racoon's den.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Vole continues her story of Francis

Not that I was all that brave, but I was that hungry. As I began to sniff my way to the sunflower seeds, I heard the most beautiful sounds coming from this Hu-man, Francis. It was like …..”

Singing!” Francis laughed at his own enthusiasm and then apologized to Vole for interrupting.

Vole continued, using the interruption, “Yes, singing! …. It was so sweet and beautiful that I felt totally safe and relaxed as I approached the seeds. Back then, I did not understand Hu-man speech, but the sweetness of the melody lulled me into a kind of reverie. Suddenly, i was no longer hungry. I stuffed a few seeds into my mouth for later and moved toward the singing Hu-man, I mean Francis,” she nodded toward Francis and bowed slightly. Francis returned the bow and was grinning from ear to ear.

Vole did not continue speaking. She appeared lost in in a reverent memory. It was Francis who finally broke the silence:

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Vole continues her story of Francis

Of course none of the us, at that time, understood his language which shuffled back and forth between English and Latin. But, we did understand the body movements and gestures he made, and his tone of voice carried the perfect reflection of his varying emotional states.

Francis dropped to his knees, but only at the conclusion of his prayer. THEN FROM HIS ROBE, HE BEGAN TO DRAW FORTH FOOD OF EVERY VARIETY AND TYPE. He arranged the food in a kind of mandala and then walked to the edge of the clearing by a large and wise oak tree (named Charles). There he sat down and began to sing again, softly.”

Vole's voice began to rise in pitch as well as volume as she reached this part of her narrative. “I,” she said with a regal humility that would have done any one of them proud, “was the very first to approach the food mandala to eat!”

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon - Vole continues her story of Francis

This male Hu-man came and in the middle of a large clearing paced off a large circle, marking its boundaries with pine boughs. Then he tied brightly colored cloth in each of the four cardinal directions. Finally he stepped into the middle of the circle, raised his arms, and offered the following prayer:

Jesus, Son of Great Mystery, Divine Guide and Lord, thank you for opening this Way!
Open my heart to receive and bless all things. Let me be a channle of Thy Grace. In service to all beings, I offer these humple prayers and supplications.
Oh divine Master, who came to take away the pain of this world, grant that I may seek not so much to be consoled as to console. May I seek not so much to be fed as to feed.
Thou art the First Cause and the Last Effect. In Thy loving service I find my only joy and satisfation. Thank you for what you are about to accomplish through my willingness this day.

Amen”

Francis Book II Vole tells her story

Vole was in the process of moving her entire family, in fact, entire clan to her present location where she met Worm, Robin and Crow, and now, Raccoon. They were camped for the evening in the slums of Assisi. There had been a rather severe drought that summer and fall so the animals in that region were in a bad, bad way.

Vole had just secured their meager belongings for the night when she heard a strange melody ringing through the wood. As the sound drew closer all could recognize the voice of a male Hu-man singing happily.
It was loud enough to wake all the critters within a half mile in any direction. And that is exactly what happened. All the critters with in a half mile in all directions woke up and came to see what this new Hu-man joy was all about.

What happened next was the subject of much discussion for the entire animal population within twenty-five miles of Assisi.

Vole was telling of the time she first heard of the Francis Hu-man. “Rat told me about him. He said he watched him leave food scraps in alleys in order that the alley critters would not go hungry.. Said he saw Him with his own eyes.”

“I guess that prepared me for what I witnessed with my own eyes!”

Everyone unconsciously and instinctively moved a little closer to Vole. Vole, sensing the sudden shift in energy when greetings were over, took a deep breath to shift 'nervous' into 'energized'. And so the story unfolded:

Francis Book II Robin, Worm, Vole, Crow, and Raccoon return to the story

Of course Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon did not really care about all this bibliography. What they knew, they knew from stories of encounters with him by their friends or occasionally, even themselves. They did not care or even think about his childhood. They knew from nothing about his transformational encounter that fateful evening. Nor, did they need to.

Francis greeted Racoon's new friends as old distant relations. After cordial greetings, everyone settled in to hear Vole's tale. And this is the true tale he told:

Book II - Francis - Faith of Zoran

The peace became everlasting, and in that time, the three became brothers of the Faith of Zoran1. Some say that Francis started this scared order even before he began the Franciscans. Scholars are quick to point out the influences of Zoran theology on the writings of Francis and his brothers.
For the readers' edification, a small example will suffice. When Francis writes about the Unity of All Life, his theology comes directly from the Zoran Unity of Religious Thought. Both hold that all that Is is of One Fabric and One Spirit.

So just so, in that holy moment of time Francis was born again as were his two closest disciples, once beggars in the street. A bond was formed that holy night, a brotherhood that has survived in strength up to this very day. Francis became a 'baby saint' and the two beggars became God's Holy Instruments of Peace.

Book II - Francis - Francis kisses the beggar

Filled with the emotion of unconditional love, Francis bent over and kissed the man who was on his knees.
He kissed him not once not twice, but three times; first on the top of his head, then on his third eye, and finally, on his heart. Light :to those who had eyes to see and hearts to understand and love to all. It is just how it was/is/shall be.

Francis was struck dumb. No longer could he make speech; the sounds he did make were animal like, and expressive of raw emotion. And Francis sighed... a long slow relaxed sigh. And the moment rang true and all was good and peace filled the very air they breathed.

Book II Francis - Francis shares what he can

Francis' heart melted that moment. He was carrying a bag full of party food to share with his family. He reached in and pulled out two loaves of fresh baked bread. But, he went unnoticed by the fighting pair. They were tangled in a ball of ferocity. Then, as if by some miracle, one was thrown across the alley and Francis stepped quickly between them. He offered his loaves and suddenly the fight was over
.
Each man grabbed for the loaf nearest to themselves. Francis began to actually feel their hunger. He reached into his coat pocket and offered them each a coin; enough for each to buy enough food for the next week. One man fell to his knees thanking Francis over and over again. The other began to weep uncontrollably. Francis wept with him.

Then Francis did something incredible.

Book II Francis -Francis is transformed

Francis was unfamiliar with the section of Assisi in which he found himself. A couple of times, he ended walking into cull de sacs and had to turn around to retrace his steps. It was just past sunset when Francis came upon the scene that changed his life forever.

As he rounded a corner near the bakery district, he saw two beggars fighting over a loaf of bread. Being totally unaccustomed to seeing violence that close and personal left Francis feeling violated and offended. “What's wrong with these two that they cannot just work out a way to share the loaf.” It seemed to him that any two children over five would have seen the obvious solution of sharing.

But then, his inner vision shifted. Just as disgust for the two scrappers was about to overwhelm his senses, Francis saw the pair as the frightened and hungry children that they were. Disgust melted as compassion washed over and through him.

Book II Francis

Book II
He was a wild child, a kid born to give parents grey hair. He gave the best parties at school. He was a lady's man. He was a gentleman's gentle man. He was fair to behold and splendorous to entertain. He was a MAN'S MAN.

That is until one day he came home late by an unfamiliar route. That day he gave up being a boy and became a man in less than an hour's time. There are many legends and stories about what happened that afternoon. We have chosen to tell one of our favorites.

It happened like this:

He was returning from an after school adventure involving the Bishop's maid and a cow named Sally.

Robin, Worm, Crow, Vole, and Raccoon (Worm tells a tale)

"Yes, he comes by my tree every day, usually around the time when the sun is the highest.  He calls himself Francis."

"Fran - sis, ....Fran-sis, ... Fran-sis ..." Worm said the name over and over slowly as if trying to remember some long past association to the name.

Ever vigilant, Crow noted that the 'high sun' was less than an hour away.

But Worm was lost in the contemplation of that name, Francis.  Where had he heard that name before?  Suddenly, he shouted, "Francis!  That's it!"

All heads turned toward worm.  A quick glance around the Raccoon's lair revealed not only all eyes fixed on worm, but all minds and hearts as well.  Worm began to glow a bit, but this time it was embarrassment at being thrust so suddenly into the center arena of attention.  Worm started quietly, slowly to unfold a most incredible tale about the man that they all hoped to meet:

Robin, Worm, Crow, and Vole - now featuring: Raccoon

"He spoke for an hour, but he listened too.  He really understood me like no other Hu-man in my past."  Raccoon's eyes began to fill with warm, emotional tears, re-living those moments with the Hu-man.

He said he had a message from 'The One', 'The Mystery, none greater'.  He said the the day was coming and Now Is when a lion would lie down with a lamb.  He claimed to be a 'voice, crying in the wilderness', "  Only he said, "Crying for the Wilderness.. He remembered the lightness of his Being when the Hu-man was present.

Taking in a deep breath, Racoon, held it, and then, let it out with a relaxed, gentle sigh.

The silence was broken by (who else) Crow.  "Did you think to ask the Hu-man how we were all going to eat?"

"No ..... it just did not seem important at the time."  Raccoon did not appreciate the interruption.

"Well, I for one, sure would like to meet this Hu-man," said Vole wistfully.

"I meet him every day," Raccoon was proud to say it.
